Math 11 Exemption Test (DCMX)

The °µÍø51 Math 11 Exemption Assessment (DCMX) is a 50-question multiple choice test which meets the requirements for Foundations of Math 11 as per British Columbia's Ministry of Education.  This assessment takes approximately three hours to complete via Blackboard.

Who should write

The DCMX is for students who don’t have proof of completing Foundations of Math 11.  This assessment can meet the requirements for a range of courses at °µÍø51.  Please see the Test results section for more information.

What to bring to the test

Please bring:

  • Government issued photo identification (ie: a passport, a driver's license)
  • You °µÍø51 Student Number
  • A pen or pencil
  • A scientific calculator

What it tests 

The test includes questions related to the following topics:

  • Simplifying expressions: rational expressions, expressions with roots and/or positive, negative or rational exponents, complex fractions, excluded values in radical and rational expressions
  • Factoring polynomials
  • Solving equations: linear, quadratic, radical, rational, exponential (with the variable as base or as exponent), literal and systems of equations
  • Direct, inverse and joint variation
  • Functions: function notation, evaluating functions, finding domain and range of polynomial, radical and rational functions
  • Graphing: linear functions, quadratic functions of the form  y=a(x−p)2 + q, completing the square, determining
  • Trigonometry: right-triangle trigonometry, solving trig equations over the domain: 0≤θ≤360° and θ∈ R, solving oblique triangles using the law of sines and the law of cosines
  • Statistics: average, standard deviation, normal distribution and probability
  • Problem solving: using proportional reasoning, rates, scale factors, area, volume and patterns

Preparation for the test

We suggest reviewing books related to Basic Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, or College Algebra.  The has several of these books available.

Test results

You'll usually get your results and meet with an Assessment Services Coordinator right after the test. If results take longer (up to 24 hours), a Coordinator will contact you. If you're not successful, they'll help you explore other options to meet your math requirement.

If you score 38 or higher, you have met the Math requirements for Academic Foundations for Potential Nursing (Certificate) and Academic Foundations for Potential Psychiatric Nursing (Certificate).

If you score 30 or higher, you have met the Math 11 requirement for most °µÍø51 courses.

If you score 28 or higher, you have met the Math requirement for the Opticianry (Diploma).

Waiting period for DCMX rewrites

You can rewrite the DCMX four months after your initial attempt, and you are allowed a maximum of two attempts every two years.

How to book an assessment

You can register up to 48 hours (two business days) before your desired exam date.  If you need to cancel, it must be done no later than 24 hours (one business day) before the exam. If you cancel within the 24 hour period, it could be counted as an attempt.
